BREAKING: Tensions Reportedly High In Ben Johns Camp Ahead Of Hertz Championship, Sources Cite 'Paddle Discourse'

MESA, AZ — Tensions are running high in the Ben Johns camp ahead of this weekend’s Hertz Championship, multiple sources close to the player have told The Pickle Post.

According to two league insiders familiar with the situation, the world’s top-ranked men’s singles player has been “uncharacteristically quiet” during pre-tournament practice sessions at the Mesa Tennis & Pickleball Center, where field play opens Friday morning. A third source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, described the mood in the Johns camp as “guarded” and “intentionally low-key.”

The sources cited recent developments in what one insider described as “the broader paddle discourse” as a contributing factor.

The Pickle Post was unable to confirm the specific nature of the discourse in question. Calls and texts to Johns’s representatives were not returned. A spokesperson for the Carbon Ace company, which sponsors Johns, declined to comment when reached Tuesday evening.

However, multiple people familiar with the matter indicate that the recent leak of internal product roadmap documents from a competing paddle manufacturer — first reported on a pickleball podcast Friday — has created complications for Johns’s pre-tournament preparation. The leaked roadmap reportedly contains technical specifications for a paddle expected to be released in late 2026 that may, according to sources, “change the equipment landscape in ways the current sponsor agreements were not designed to accommodate.”

One insider characterized the situation as “fluid.” Another described it as “developing.” A third said only that they had been instructed not to discuss it, which The Pickle Post took as confirmation.

Johns enters the Hertz Championship as the heavy favorite in men’s singles, where he is the defending champion. He is also competing in men’s doubles with longtime partner Collin Johns, and in mixed doubles with Anna Leigh Waters. Sources indicate all three brackets are expected to proceed as scheduled.

A separate source close to the Waters camp, contacted Tuesday afternoon, said that Waters herself was “locked in” and “not paying attention to any of this.” Waters’s team did not respond to a follow-up request for comment.

The Hertz Championship is the fourth stop on the 2026 PPA Tour. It is being broadcast on Tennis Channel and selected ESPN platforms. Singles play begins Friday at 9:00 AM local time.

The Pickle Post will be on the ground in Mesa throughout the weekend. Additional coverage to follow.
